Rebecca & Greg’s Family Portrait

Last Saturday was a perfect afternoon for a backyard family portrait. Rebecca & Greg’s fabulous backyard at Cronulla provided the perfect backdrop. Neve’s first portrait shoot since being a tiny baby went well once she warmed up! As usual, the ever handsome Hamish turned on the smiles big time. Thanks guys, looking forward to seeing where you put this shoot’s canvas!

Lisa’s Maternity Shoot

Last Thursday I snuck in a last minute shoot for Lisa before her new addition arrives this Friday! Charlie proved to be every photographer’s “angel” – quite the poser. She definately enjoyed herself.

Sarah & Graham – 6th March 2011

I always know when a wedding will be really special, and it’s usually when the bride mentions something about “fireworks”!

Everything about Sarah’s day was sparkly! Her fabulous gown with the belt that every lady at the wedding wanted to get her hands on, the jewellery and even the sparkling tiara worn by Sarah’s diva dog Bella. This was a day not to be missed and even Sarah’s bridesmaid Blair was not going to let a 20hr flight from Toronto Canada stop her from being here for Sarah’s big day.

The lovely ceremony at South Cronulla Uniting was followed by photos at Darook Park. We were having so much fun that we decided we didn’t need to go down to North Cronulla beach for more shots and headed straight to the reception.

Then, just when you thought things couldn’t get any shinier, fireworks no less greeted Sarah and Graham as they entered their reception at Summer Salt. More fireworks at the cake cutting and just for those that had been asleep thus far – fireworks during the bridal waltz! Sarah and Graham certainly had the time of their lives and that was the quintessential wedding dance song from Dirty Dancing that kicked the party off proper.

Enjoy your honeymoon in Thailand guys! After such a sensational wedding day, you deserve a relax on the beach. But Sarah – stay sparkly!

Melinda & Stephen – March 5th 2011

Melinda & Stephen’s wedding at Belgenney farm was everything a country wedding should be – laid back bride & groom, welcoming guests, great weather and unbeatable scenery!

Camden’s Belgenney farm didn’t dissapoint and delivered a spectacular venue that all the guests thoroughly enjoyed and just quietly – it’s a photographers nirvana! History, sweeping vistas and character laden farm buildings.

Delivered to the ceremony in nothing less than 3 ’57 Chevvies, Mel and the girls arrived in style! Mel was attended to by no less than 4 bridesmaids and her two gorgeous kids – 7yr old Shae and 2.5 yr old Ryan who truly was so cute he almost stole mum’s thunder! After the ceremony on the lawn which was celebrated by close family friend Graeme Morn, we ventured into the vineyards and farm buildings for photos that are nothing short of spectacular.

The reception in the Granary rounded out the day with perfection. Heaped with character, the service and food was awsome and the atmosphere was just great. Thanks Mel & Stephen, Alex and I had a ball!

March Photography Pro Tip

This month, I’ll be answering that age old question – why should I hire a professional???

Your wedding photographs are in some way the only vivid record you’ll have to keep. Entrusting someone inexperienced to capture your big day is an enormous risk. Of course the interpretation of your day will vary depending on who you decide to take those pictures.

Consider your choices of photographers at the moment:
(1) Uncle Fred.- Who has gone out and spent $3000 on a camera kit and therefore must know what he’s doing.
(2) The plumber, who on weekends photographs weddings as a second job.
(3) And the Professional Photographer.

One would say that they all take Pictures. Yes, that’s right, but if your expectations are high and you want something original, you need to choose very carefully, with open eyes, rather than facing disappointment after. Remember, a professional photographer has made his/her life’s dedication to photography, just as a Doctor or a specialist would commit. You have ONE chance only to capture your day. The cheapest photographer does not mean you have the right person for the job!

The most important point to remember is that Wedding and Portrait photography is an artform in itself. It takes not only good equipment, it takes technical mastery, knowledge of shooting in natural light, speed, stealth (especially important during the ceremony), familiarity with the area you want photos taken, creativity and most importantly – a “people” personality! There is a lot to be said for an EXPERIENCED wedding photographer, and by that I mean 10 years or more shooting weddings exclusively, not 10 weddings in between shooting Corn Flakes boxes. Not all people can be photographers and not all professional photographers can shoot weddings.

Just as a brush and canvas is to an artist, so is a camera to a photographer. A GOOD photographer paints with light and can make images come alive. He/she has the job to make the bride and groom look their very best and see their day like no other person there.

A GOOD photographer will use different types of cameras and lenses and will photograph with no flash for 70% of the time. Digital photography has also come a long way but make sure your photographer is competant in shooting in digital as well as processing, retouching and archiving your digital files. I personally believe that it is not possbile to be proficient to a professional level in all aspects of digital photography post-production (file imaging, processing, re-touching) without formal qualifications. If you photographer is not up to speed with the latest digital post-production techniques and processes, then check to see if they have someone on their staff that is. Great photos on the day are just the start. You want your images to look amazing, not overdone.

Good photographers’ works are stamped with their own style, so chose the photographer and style that best suits you.

Rebecca & Seyfi’s Wedding Day – 25th Feb 2011

The heatwave broke just in time to birth a perfect day for Rebecca and Seyfi. Their wedding was held on the lawn outside Dunbar House at Watsons Bay. The bride and groom prepared at the iconic Watsons Bay Hotel then after some photos by the beach, they strolled together to their wedding place.

Such a romantic day would not be complete without photos under the enveloping Morton Bay Figs by the water. Rebecca and Seyfi’s union is an example of perfect cultural blending. Rebecca’s Spanish background fits perfectly with Seyfi’s Turkish heritage, complete with family that made the journey all the way from Europe especially for the big day.

Dunbar House was the perfect reception venue and all the guests appreciated it’s newly renovated & sumptuous interior. Fabulous food, smart service and flamenco rounded out a beautiful day.

Louise & Craig – Feb 5th 2011

This was a day not to be forgotten in a hurry! For many Sydneysiders it will be remembered as the hottest day in 85 years, but for Craig & Louise and their guests, it will be remembered as their spectacular wedding day!

Louise was cool glamour in her gown and everyone arrived in style aboard their super cool GT Falcons. 2 black, 2 silver. After the ceremony by the lighthouse at Wollongong, we all took shelter from the heat in the Novotel Wollogong’s oasis (well, it was for us!) foyer. After family photos here, we braved the heat to get some stunning shots out by the point at City Beach. Thank you to Louise and Craig and all the bridal party for soldiering on and having the determination to overcome the weather – it was well worth it for the amazing shots we got.

Family and friends then recharged their melted batteries and boogied the night away at the Novotel Wollongong.

Jodi & Mark – 9th January 2011

What a way to start the year! Jodi & Mark’s wedding has been a long time coming and WOW, it was worth the wait. Whilst Jodi was busy planning their immaculate wedding day, Mark kept himself out of trouble madly building Jodi her perfect reception venue – their stunning new home in Como.

Jodi must really be congratulated for planning such a spectacular day. Every detail was lovingly crafted, right down to the Porsche Panamera generously donated for the day by groomsman Adrian.

The ceremony took place at Darook Park, presided over by the ever fabulous Lillian Lyon. We had amazing light on the beach for tonnes of shots, then back to the house for a truly intimate and wonderful reception that none of their guests will forget. I certainly won’t forget this wedding day in a hurry!

Erin & Michael – 3rd of December 2010

After meeting me at Jasmine & Matt’s wedding earlier in the year, I was delighted to capture Erin & Michael’s day too. The weather held off to give us the most perfect shooting conditions which showcased Erin’s fabulous colour choice for the bridal party.

The ceremony was overlooking beautiful Bulli Beach, just north of Wollongong, attended by all Erin & Michael’s family and friends including their two beautiful black labs. A lovingly hand made ceremony tent really set the tone and was a wonderful addition.

Erin then took me to my new favourite shooting location – the boat sheds on sandon point. Thanks Erin! Then onto more shots on Wollongong Harbour before partying the night away at City Beach.
